This is the temp/humidity in my "shop" (garage). Sorry for the flash reflection, but you can see three readings. IN (inside) OUT (outside) and Humidity. I'm really pretty lucky in that humidity is just about perfect for a big part of the year. On occasion the heat is a deal killer. It's been 105 plus for two weeks straight around here. The temp today was 113F but by the time I thought to get the camera it was only 111F (at 4:30PM). So,until the weather cools a bit, I just close up shop and wait... Uh in the pool.

Great for using HHG though! With that kind of heat, you don't even have to warm up the pieces beforehand and you'll have extended working time...

Well, I was about to make a wisecrack and say "Build during the midddle of the night," but then I noticed that you live in Selma, CA. I used to live in Bakersfield, and unfortunately when it got hot like that, low temps for the evening were often still above 90F. So I guess if I were in your shoes with an unairconditioned shop area, I'd confine my work out there to dust-making activities only, and make room on the dining room table for gluing, side bending, french-polishing, etc. Hopefully SWMBO won't mind -- too much. SWMBO First time I've ever heard that. Very funny. I am threatening to convert half the garage into a walk-in humidor so that I don't have to be held hostage by the weather. That may happen in the next couple of years, but right now it's not so bad as I only build a couple of guitars each year. Michael; You are exactly correct. The low of 79F-72F happens about 5am. It is in the 90's well into the first hours of the morning.

How do you handle this..? Reset the AC breaker or add freon.... And in this case, I'd fill up the humidifier and crank it up. Then I'd hop in my pool until things got right....

Turn on your swamp cooler Ronn, your temp will go down and your humidity up. Of course your gonna sweat all over the guitar but if your wet sanding that shouldn't be a problem. I know a luthier who says he ONLY sands his guitars with body fluids, usually meaning saliva, but sweat would surely work too. I'll be installing an AC unit in the next couple of days. Just up the road from you, the Sacramento area has had 10 straight days over 100°. We had about 115° here in Cool a couple days ago.

Actually the Chico Ca area is usually pretty nice so I wouldn't worry too much. We don't normally have heat waves like this. Besides, it's the home of the Sierra Nevada Brewery which host's some very nice musical performances not to mention the greatest beer in the world.

Actually, Chico can get rippin' hot too. Dont let that discourage you though. Chico is a great little town. Really very pretty. I went to college there. I'm up in the Redding area where it's not uncommon for us to be this hot. Had one day a couple of weeks ago that hit 117. Chico on Sunday was 112. Two years ago when it got to 117 that tied us as the hottest place in the world with someplace in the Sahara desert. I feel for you. I went out into my garage/shop the other night at about 9 in the evening and it was still over 106 in there. I'm just starting my first acoustic guitar and I've been to wimpy to want to go out and do anything. Sweaty hands do put a nice patina on a handplane in short order though.

Hey Darrin, I lived in the Redding area off & on in the 70's & 80's and you are right, Redding can be a hot sonofa gun. It seems that Redding in it's little box canyon of the northern valley has more blacktop than any other city around (to me anyway)and it just swelters at times. But you definately get all four seasons up there. BTW, welcome to the OLF and show us some pics of your #1 in progress.

I don't miss that Central Valley heat one bit. I remember a day in the 70s when it was 110 and cloudy. Could hardly breathe. Plus I was driving an old Healey that seemed to use part of the passenger compartment to vent engine heat. Spokane gets maybe 105 tops a few days a year, with humidity in the 30s, so it's bearable, plus it cools off nicely in the evenings. John, you're going to love the AC specially with the heat you guys are getting. I just put a Sears window unit in my 200 sq ft garage shop with only the steel door insulated. Saturday it was 101 IIRC, but the shop stayed below 80. It was really comfy.

Mmmmmm... beer.... We have a very good brewery here in Helena too. But, a dearth of decent restaurants, and virtually no local music scene. And there's this gal in Chico I'm kinda sweet on... We'll see, need to stay here until March to get vested in my retirement fund... -Mark

Grab a sweater Ronn! Your high for Monday will be only 94! I guess you can also head about an hour east and gain 4000' in elevation. Pretty country up in the mountains there. Folsom, CA,where I live, had 23 days with over 100 heat last July. This July we've only had 10+/-, this is LIVIN'! I've been able to moderate my garage temp by leaving the door to the house open (when I'm not making dust). I've insulated the whole area pretty well. We'll see what the energy bill is this month...
